Admittedly, I dont really know what I was going for when I composed this soundtrack, aside from referencing an era which I really cared for. Before Spotify and Apple Music (and still for many songs) you would have to torrent the song or simply stream it from youtube. Many youtube videos for songs would contain a fan composed edit of the song against a scene or two from a movie, and these often led to many daydreams of which songs would go perfectly with which movies. There were many films I felt were done a slight injustice in their soundtracks, and for this assignment I wanted to see if the sentimental value of these songs would give a score more “punch” for me than it would for another person who is experiencing the song and the film for the first time. I also wanted to reference current day auditory experiences.
I am often on social media where browsing through is common, leading to oftentimes very distinct sounds for seconds at a time, compiled into a hour long mash if given the chance. I think this is mostly detrimental, as many times we may hear annoying or otherwise unpleasant audio imposed unto us by someone nearby, as well as each individual who selected their sounds and published their videos. People purposefully create loud, intense audios to target and gather the attention of those whose nerve endings are burnt out by constant loops of interaction. But at times, I have experienced small clips of sound meld in a very interesting way with a wholly unrelated clip beforehand, creating a moment of fulfillment that humanly couldve only been reached through conscious iteration, and more sparsely at that. I wanted to experiment with this idea of a brutally cropped block of sound creating something beautiful with another one. I dont think I quite reached it, but I feel like the audio is reminiscent of both a passerby on tiktok and the opening of a dj set at a rave.
